Harbor Seal Princess Selkie

Description

Selkies:: Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their life, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. If a woman wishes to make contact with a selkie male, she must shed seven tears into the sea. If a man steals a female selkie's skin she is in his power and is forced to become his wife. Female selkies are said to make excellent wives, but because their true home is the sea, they will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean. If she finds her skin she will immediately return to her true home, and sometimes to her selkie husband, in the sea. Sometimes, a selkie maiden is taken as a wife by a human man and she has several children by him. In these stories, it is one of her children who discovers her sealskin (often unwitting of its significance) and she soon returns to the sea. The selkie woman usually avoids seeing her human husband again but is sometimes shown visiting her children and playing with them in the waves.  (Source - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selkie )

This idea came to me after watching BBC Blue Planet for the umpteenth time xP Often you see mermaids, merbettas, merwhathaveyou but you don't often see Selkies or the like. While I did consider the possibility of a women torso and seal half, I decided to do a selkie in it's 'seal' form, and make her a princess by way of giving her a circlet she wears in both forms. Will I ever draw the humanoid version? Maybe, some day.

More importantly I chose the selkie for the reason that it's a less common mythological creature. And one of so~ many that cultures all over the world have created to explain the world around them, a story and symbol so strong it has lasted through centuries of our history.

Many of you already know I am not religious, and fewer of you will know that I'm often enthralled with science and at the same time at war with it....

I believe that the greatest treasure..the greatest truth...the greatest gift...does not come from above on high, nor does it come from deconstructing the natural world. I believe that nature is perfect just the way it is, and it's a shame we've come the way we have. Where are the stories of modern day man? Where is our link to nature now? In our history there had been advancements of several kinds...and some of those are religious and scientific. While some will cry for joy, I honestly do weep for what's been lost. Cultures slaughtered in the name of 'God' and whatever monarch, and environments everywhere plundered for the next cure for cancer, or make up brand, or whatever the consumer fad is at the time. And then anyone in between continues to live as we can, and that means some of us have a heavy hand in pollution, and turning away from atrocities we'd rather pretend didn't exist...instead of doing the right thing and stopping them.

So there you have it. This is a wish, a dream, a memoir of sorts...for a mankind that was in awe and feared and respected the world around him, and understood his was just a place in it...not anywhere above it. For the only ones above the world were gods...and what terrible 'gods' we have been.

Yet we do have potential for change...to change ourselves. We boast what great minds we have...we boast of our evolution to 'rule' the earth.....so why is it so hard for us great and powerful and intelligent beings to find a better way? Why can't we co-exist?
